The Kids Can Help Book
Published in Paperback by Perigee (August, 1992)
Author: Suzanne Logan
Average review score:

excellent resource!
With an infant and two preschool children, I was at a loss how to introduce them to service projects that they could actually do. I liked the idea of helping serve food at a homeless shelter, but they aren't big enough to help yet, and at their ages they would need my supervision so that I wouldn't be much help either! Lo and behold, the first item suggested in this little book was serving at a homeless shelter with the variation of making after-school snacks such as cookies for the children at the shelter, delivered once or twice a month. Now THAT I can do with my kids, and they can contribute substantially, not just stand around and watch me help! This book is a great resource for moms who want to get their kids involved, or for kids looking for ways to serve. It's written in a very kid-friendly fashion, with warnings where appropriate: with the suggestion of making bag lunches to pass out to homeless people on the streets comes an underlined warning for children never to do this without an adult.

American Romance
The Last Bridesmaid:
American Romance by Leandra Logan is stunningly exciting and invigorating, Although I have not read the book in its' totatality, as I breifly examined it, phrases consisting of power words which give meaning to the needs of human yearning caught my attention.

An example of such phrases is as follows, I want you to "mold me and make me into the man of your dreams" shows a special kind of love...

LAST NIGHT AN ANGEL STOPPED BY
"LAST NIGHT AN ANGEL STOPPED BY" WAS THE MOST INSPIRING, UPLIFTING BOOK I HAVE EVER READ. I WOULD RECOMMEND IT FOR ALL AGES. AS A CHILD, I GREW UP IN TENNESSEE, AND I WAS A SOUTHERN BAPTIST. AS I GREW UP I REALIZED THAT I DID NOT HAVE TO GO TO CHURCH IN ORDER TO KNOW GOD. I HAVE A BROTHER IN TENNESSEE, WHO IS A MINISTER, AND CONDEMS ME AND ANYONE ELSE, TO HELL, WHO DOES NOT ATTEND HIS CHURCH, AND ESPECIALLY IF ONE DOES NOT SPEAK IN TONGUES. THIS BOOK PROVES TO ME THAT I HAVE BEEN RIGHT WITH GOD ALL ALONG. THANK YOU LOGAN AND DARNELL.

I KNOW THE AUTHORS OF THIS BOOK, AND CONSIDER THEM MEMBERS OF MY FAMILY. DONA, THE MOTHER OF DARNELL, AND THE WIFE ON LOGAN, I KNOW HAD TO BE APART OF THIS EFFORT. I APPLAUD THEM! THANK YOU LOGAN AND DARNELL FOR MY SIGNED COPY. I WILL READ AND REREAD, AND TREASURE IT FOREVER.

Lewis and Clark and the Image of the American Northwest
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (December, 1991)
Author: John Logan Allen
Average review score:

Brilliant
A truly fascinating read of exploration and attempted location of the mythical water passage across the western U.S. from the geographical perspective. From the mid 1600's up to and including the Lewis and Clark expedition, geographical mappings of the west were theoretical and conjectural, leading to misconceptions and inaccuracies in cartography and images of unexplored lands. With loyal support and backing from Jefferson, Lewis and Clark set out to locate the legendary water route across America for U.S. commerce, while at the same time collecting and taking notes on cartography, botany, zoology, geology, ethnology and natural resources, along with postulating future agricultural possibilities for the nation. Although the image of a fabled water passage was shattered and the idea of a totally agrarian society was somewhat fragmented, the Lewis and Clark expedition did succeed in being the premier stepping-stone for western expansion and maintained the imagery process of the west right up to the present time. A spellbinding read.

From the back...
Katrina Polinari couldn't seem to escape her family ties. Though she'd made good as a police officer, to many people she was still linked with the sins of her father.
Boyd Logan was hot on the trail of an organized crime figure, and he believed Katrina held the key to tracking him down...
Fate threw them together as make-believe lovers. Would passion unite them for real-and for good?

In my Opinion...
Katrina has tried all her life to prove to the world that she is better than her family. She even became a cop so that she could put away the bad guys. Many generations of Katrina's family worked as hitman for the mob, including her father and brother who are now dead. Now Katrina has learned that the mob has put out a contract on her aunt. When Katrina's aunt called to ask for help, she knew that she would help her. Katrina had no idea that by helping her aunt she would not only put her career in danger, but also her life. Boyd Logan works for the FBI and his current case is to bring down the same mobster that put out the contract on Katrina's aunt. When Boyd sees Katrina entering the mobster's home he decides to stick close to her in case she is involved with the any of the mobsters dealings. Katrina is hurt when she discovers that her boss, co-workers, and the FBI have doubts about which side of the law she is on. Katrina agrees to stick close to Boyd not only to help her aunt, but to prove to everyone that she is one of the good guys. Katrina and Boyd never planned to get romantically involved with one another. Katrina knew that because of her family people would always doubt her, and if she were to get involved with Boyd they would doubt him too. Katrina tries hard to fight her feelings for Boyd, but what she doesn't count on is Boyd's stubborn refusal to let her go. This is an enjoyable book with plenty of romance and suspense. Although I found Katrina a little too stubborn for her own good, I still enjoyed her spirit and determination to seperate herself from her criminal family. I liked this book and look forward to reading the stories about Logan's brothers.

Logan's Run: The Life and Times of Larry Logan
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (August, 2001)
Author: Larry Logan

Larry Logan Tells His Story
I have loved the sound of Classical harmonica since the first time I got to see Larry Adler. There is something oddly appealing about using the humble harmonica to make the beautiful of Gershwin, Bach, Ravel and others. Like Harry James said about bringing the Goodman band to Carnegie Hall, "I felt like a whore in church". Classical harmonica players elevate their humble instrument to unexpected levels of virtuosity and amaze the uninitiated.

Larry Logan is a world-class harmonica player who has been playing since the 1930's. He performs regularly with orchestras around the world has released some absolutely amazing recordings. His shows delight audiences with his remarkable musicianship and he punctuates the music with his affable Irish wit.

This book tells the story of Larry's life and career. you will find keen insights into the lonely, thankless job of playing Classical music on the harmonica. Logan takes ample time to give us a rare glimpse into the prejudices of the movers and shakers of the Classical music field and leaves wishing that we could hear more of his kind of music. There is quite a bit of detail as to how he works, both as a musician and as an artist struggling to overcome the misconception that the harmonica doesn't belong in high-brow music.

This is definitely one book worth reading if you're interested in Classical harmonica.

GET THIS BOOK!!!!!!!! ESSENTIAL READING!!!!!!!!
Ok, confession time. I am a huuuuge fan of this trilogy. I first read the first book back in the mid '70's. Having begun to read sf/f when I was about 8, I was ready at 14 to read more 'adult' stuff. [{This was a couple of years before the movie came out. If I had seen the movie before I read the book, I probably wouldn't have picked up the book. It wasn't that bad a movie, on it's own terms, but, I think they took the concept & ran with it.} {Ok, ok, ok, I'm sorry, alright, but, I just haaaaaad to get THAAAAAT off my chest. Thank you. I have been waiting 25{?!} years to do that!}] I have read the book so many times that I have lost count. It still holds up as fresh as when it was written. Although very '60's in style & atmosphere it is still very timely & thought-provoking in it's narrative. Add to that a bright, tough, brainy, female protagonist (Those who saw the movie &/or telly series will be stunned at Jessica's portrail here, she can more than take care of herself, & she pulls our hero's ass out of the fire a couple of times), an interesting 'love-on-the-run' story, & action than never lets up to the last page. It's a breathless, rollarcoaster/thrillride that & the very interesting chapter pagination helps. I got my hardcover copy about 10 years ago at Minicon, {a science-fiction convention} & I have treasured it ever since! {I have a soft-cover reading copy.} Also, there are gorgeous black & white illistrations by William F. Nolan! This book belongs on EVERY fan's shelf! I can't reccommend it highly enough! More, Mr. Nolan, More!

Belgian exchange student knows her stuff, and this is it
I'm an exchange student living in Belgium for a year.. and this book is AMAZING! I'm determined to do everything in this book, and I'm already on my way! A few of the pricing things and anything to do with money is a little outdated (ie: the Diamond museum in Antwerp is no longer free). But the authors know their stuff, and (quoting Notting Hill) has actually been to Belgium, which is a plus. And not only do they know their stuff, they give it to you straight up. No sugar coating, nothing, and that's a huge plus. Go out, buy the book, then visit our amazing country!
